HEROES OF IMPILTUR
The former base of power for the Fraternity of Tharos. The tower was generated by a powerful artifact known as the Demonstone. The tower’s exterior was a bland, unexceptional gray; its interior was filled with all manner of demonic horrors. Only those calling upon the essence of one of the demons on the Demonstone and cloaked in the blood of the innocent could enter the tower. Each level of the tower was dedicated to and took on the properties of one of the demons whose name was inscribed in the Demonstone. Because the Demontower was created from the power of the Demonstone, and the demon-names were inscribed into the stone, the names also appeared inscribed into the walls in various locations throughout the tower. To travel to a demon’s level of the tower you had to speak the demon’s name as it was inscribed on the Demonstone. The Demontower appeared in various locations throughout the fortress-city of Dun Tharos until the city was leveled by powerful magical forces in the year -176. In the Year of Visions (731) the tower was sighted again in Dun Tharos when the paladin Sarshel entered the tower and shattered the Crown of Narfell. The tower was not sighted again until about 90 years ago (1390) when it mysteriously appeared in Impiltur in the town of New Sarshel. The heroes underwent a quest to retrieve the Moaning Crown of Ndulu and used it to enter the Demontower. During the final battle atop the tower, when the death blow was dealt to the demon Tharos, the feedback from his death throws traveled through his link to the Demonstone and destroyed it. This also resulted in the destruction of the tower. The upper levels exploded while the lower levels were left in ruin. All traces of demonic magic have been expunged. Today it stands as a grim and unsightly reminder of the power that the demon cult once had over the nation.
